East Gwillimbury, ON, May 25, 2026 — Brian Johns, candidate for Mayor, today announced a series of commitments to reconnect East Gwillimbury through celebration, recognition, and stronger partnerships with the residents and groups who make the town what it is.
"East Gwillimbury thrives when residents feel recognized, included, and connected to the life of their town," said Johns. "That means celebrating our traditions, partnering with the groups who do the real work in our community, and making sure no one's contribution goes unnoticed."
Johns will re-establish community celebrations tied to the May Long Weekend, deliver free programming to improve affordability and accessibility throughout June to mark Parks and Recreation Month, and bring outdoor recreational programming to every community, including sponsor-supported Movies in the Park and outdoor skating in Holland Landing, Sharon, Queensville, and Mount Albert.
“I have known Brian for years, and his business approach to helping deliver community celebrations, movie nights, and outdoor skating is exactly the approach we need,” said Richard Gibb, a resident and hockey coach. “It respects our tax dollars while delivering for the community. Brian will make an incredible Mayor of East Gwillimbury.”
Johns will also formally recognize the cultural and religious traditions that have long been part of East Gwillimbury's identity. As Mayor, he will acknowledge Christian observances in municipal programming, support a flag raising for Christian Heritage Month, partner with local churches to display the Nativity on municipal property at Christmas, and return to calling the Town's holiday tree lighting the "Christmas Tree Lighting." Johns will also update Town policies so that other cultural and religious communities can receive similar recognition and observances.
“Inclusion should not mean people of faith have to leave their beliefs at the door of public life,” said Jennifer Lee McCabe, former Canadian Armed Forces member, East Gwillimbury Resident, and local business owner. “A truly inclusive community makes room for everyone — including those whose values are shaped by Christ. Recognizing Christian heritage and traditions does not exclude others; it reflects a community confident enough to welcome all voices.”
“I thank Brian for his willingness to support the inclusion of Christian faith symbols and heritage in East Gwillimbury's various celebrations,” said Reverend Terry Hudson. “I am glad to be part of a community with such a rich and diverse mosaic of faith traditions, and I applaud his efforts to promote unity and mutual respect. I wish him all the best in his campaign for Mayor.”
Viewing it as the cultural heart of East Gwillimbury, Johns will also expand the Town's partnership with Sharon Museum and Gardens
"Over the past four years, I have seen Brian's demonstrated commitment toward the Sharon Museum and Gardens," said Jim Pearson, Member of the Sharon Temple Museum Society Board. "Brian's belief in an expanded relationship will help support the deepening community engagement within the cultural heart of East Gwillimbury. Brian has my full support as the next Mayor of East Gwillimbury."
To honour residents directly, Johns will establish an Annual Mayor and Council Award Program and Fundraising Gala, in support of the new local hospital, with a community-led nomination process. Further, he will issue weekly Mayor's Letters of Recognition spotlighting residents, volunteers, and community leaders who strengthen East Gwillimbury.
